Priscilla (Prisca)

    (first century)
   Saint.
Priscilla was the wife of Aquila, a Jew of Pontus, but her name is always listed first. According to the Book of Acts, they were forced to leave Rome in obedience to the decree of the Emperor Claudius. Paul met them in Corinth and took them with him as far as Ephesus. They are also mentioned in the Epistle to the Romans, in I Corinthians and in II Timothy and were clearly important members of the Church. Although the name ‘Prisca’ appears on one of the catacombs and there is a church dedicated to the martyred St Prisca, there is no evidence that either of these was the New Testament Priscilla. harnack argued that Priscilla and Aquila were the authors of the Epistle to the Hebrews, but there are no real grounds for this conjecture.
